I am thus amazed - that by freeing myself, deliberately trying NOT to be busy, so as to have time to read "The Vein of Gold " - a title I first heard from my writing teacher, the prize winning novelist Ann de Graaf, as well as starting to write again. There was a time, in Houston, when I baked a loaf of bread every week. Today I am happy to report that I finished this wonderful book while waiting for two loaves of banana bread to finish baking. I felt obliged to share the house instead of enjoying it alone. I didn't look at the house I lived in as a home where the heart is but more like an obligation and I was the slave who owned it. Much to my chagrin, I had gone to conservatory precisely because I couldn't stop composing. I stopped composing when I finished my 4-year study. Just a few months ago I suddenly consciously realised that I had lost my love for cooking. Every day, I sat down and wrote my "morning pages" and then read the book, against an invisible and imaginary deadline. It was in pristine condition, and I begged to borrow it before she sold it. Now, having once again at another milestone in my life, I am forever grateful to discover this book among a collection of books for sale by an 86-year old retired artist who lives nearby. Years ago, nearly a decade ago, in London, I read The Artist's Way and religiously wrote my "morning pages" and followed the exercises. Every day, I sat down and wro I treated this book like the bible to open up my creativity once again.

Why would a person be simultaneously attracted to, and disgusted by AIDS? Why would a person say "I don't want to break these chains"? AIDS is not "hot", and it doesn't call you ("i hear you calling") like a woman might, or like you might imagine heroin does, if you were an addict.I treated this book like the bible to open up my creativity once again. So he is still addicted, and a part of him doesn't want to "break these chains".Īs for being about AIDS? That metaphor doesn't work at all. It's already "running through veins" and because it's so addictive, even if he had come off it when he (with Desmond Childs and John McCurry) wrote this song, he would still have been prone to cravings. (he "better not touch", he "wants it too much"), and heroin is, actually, poison. On a deeper level, the woman may certainly be a symbol for heroin, as others have suggested. you are welcome to read the song that way, but I can see no specific evidence in the song to back up your claim. (To those who suggested the woman in the song may be too young, or under age. If he gives into his desire, he may lose himself. do all the things he wants to do -) but he knows that will make the problem worse ("i better not touch") She is already "under skin". ("your cruel device" "my pain - your thrill").

She's the kind of person who gets a kick from men falling for her. The woman is sexy and attractive ("your mouth, so hot" "i wanna kiss you" "i wanna touch you") etc, but cruel. On the surface, this song is about a man who is in love with (or has a crush on) a woman.
